I've come to love the harmonic changes, especially the last 8 measures, of "Stella by Starlight." That tune inspired this original instrumental in yet another of my "sorta bossa" archive.

light hearted lyrical sarcasm and original music inspired by a lifetime of accompanying a boatload of excellent musicians.
With the exception of Mango Chutneyed, everything posted here results from home recording in which alll the tunes posted are original compositions of mine, with performances on the various tracks also by me.

Story behind the song
Stella by Starlight, by Victor Young and Fred Washington, is an often covered jazz standard of which the final eight measures feature a clever set of chords, moving to the concluding tonic major chord by an adventurous yet mathematically logical path of related, paired changes, bVm-VII, IIIm-VI- IIm-V7, with more color than you can shake a stick at. Donald Fagen of Steely Dan fame encouraged us to be glad when we can use what we borrow. Happily, my exercise, October Blue doesnt sound much like Stella, but is nonetheless inspired by that tunes harmonic adventurousness, and reprises my penchant for sorta bossa rhythm.
